Arctic Cycling Challenge Rovaniemi
A midsummer bike ride from the city along riversides to the hills and fells of Lapland.
Begin an unforgettable journey from the heart of Rovaniemi, situated right at the confluence of the Kemijoki and the Ounasjoki Rivers. First, we will ride along the Ounasjoki River towards Sinettä, where we will turn West towards Ritavaara and Pello on the Finnish-Swedish border. In this route, we will enjoy riding uphill and downhill through the beautiful landscapes of Lake-Lapland.
From Pello we will turn North towards Kolari and the famous seven fells of Western Lapland, riding along the shores of the Torniojoki River and probably one of best salmon fishing spots in Finland. The Tornionjoki River or “väylä” as the locals call it, branches into the Swedish side and continues upwards towards Lake Ounasjärvi on the Finnish side. Our bike route turns North-East towards Fell Lapland, Ylläs and Äkäslomplo. The route gradually changes from river banks to fells. In the late afternoon, we will arrive in Äkäslomplo and stay in “Pirtukirkko”, one of the most traditional places in the area. It's up to us to figure out where the place got its name. The hotel is called nowadays Lapland Hotels Äkäshotelli.
A sauna, a generous dinner and comfortable rooms will be waiting for us in Äkäshotelli. In the evening, the bikes will be checked and any minor adjustments and repairs needed will be done before the next day.
After a good breakfast, we start towards the next fell resort, Kittilä. We will ride along the idyllic and hilly road, passing the seven fells of Ylläs, Ylläs, Kukas, Kesang, Aakenus, Kuer, Lainio and Pyhä to finally arrive in Kittilä, where you will be greeted again by the Ounasjoki River.
We will ride along the east side of the Ounasjoki River towards Rovaniemi and the finish line in Lapland Hotels Ounasvaara Chalets situated on the banks of the Kemijoki River, next to Ounasvaara Hill.
